A study from McGill University’s Morris Schweitzer found that three SNPs found in diseased tissue from abdominal aortic aneurysm patients were not present in blood samples from the same patients, reports The Scientist. Schweitzer’s group also tested aortic and blood samples from healthy people and saw the same inconsistency. Because of these differences, genome-wide association studies may be missing out by focusing on what’s in blood samples. “I think they may not be accurate because they might not reflect what’s in the tissue,” Schweitzer says.
