IBM said Tuesday that it was developing a chip to analyze DNA information on patients for as little as $1,000, for sequencing an individual’s genome. The additional information would help doctors perform better diagnoses on patients, by sequencing DNA faster and more cheaply than conventional solutions. The so-called “DNA transistor” sends a DNA molecule through a 3-nanometer-wide “nanopore” in a chip. An electrical sensor reads the DNA and analyzes the genetic data within as the molecule moves through the chip. The information could then be used to personalize medical information for individuals.
